Grandma's Rose

Updated: Sep 12, 2023

The Rose That Started It All

It was January 2017 and I had just begun my second semester for my AAS General Technology Welding degree. My grandma’s 90th birthday was quickly approaching, and I wanted to make her something special and that would last forever. I wanted to use my new found skills in welding, but I knew she wouldn’t appreciate a 4G bend test!

My grandma has always been an inspiration to me. She was known as the flower lady because she always had luscious gardens that were full of beautiful blooms. I pondered about making some sort of flower but I had no idea, so I asked all the welding instructors how to make a rose and they all answered, “I don't know!” "Awesome," I thought. Now what to do?

I turned to the best problem solver around, YouTube. I ended up watching two very different videos on making a rose. I decided that I was going to merge the two techniques together. When I went to make it, I discovered a better, more efficient way. Grandma's rose set off a chain reaction to improve myself, or the technique on every rose I make. Each and every rose that I have made since then has improved from the last one.Portfolio

Everyone has to start somewhere, so don't be afraid to start your journey now! No matter what, there will be times that you fail and make mistakes. I know it sucks, but there is also something very beautiful in it. You will grow, becoming more confident and creative at the same time. See those opportunities as progress.
