Sunflower Garden Sculpture

The Sunflower Sculpture represents the beauty and joy she brought into this world on the daily.

Lori Lynn Gilbert Kaye made national news when she was killed in a tragic synagogue shooting in 2019. She made the ultimate sacrifice by getting between the gunman and her Rabbi. Lori was able to spare his life, but unfortunately lost her life instead.

Lori was such a beautiful selfless soul, she would go out into her California community everyday, buying sunflowers and baking fresh loaves of bread for anyone who needed a pick-me-up.

When I was first contacted about making this project, I was humbled and honored. I never would have thought that my skills were enough to to honor an amazing woman's legacy. I not only had to honor Lori, but this was going to be given to her husband and daughter to be a constant reminder of her.

This sunflower garden sculpture was going to be presented to Lori’s husband and daughter, at a Gala on March 8th, 2020. (Covid-19 canceled this event) It was presented in private instead.

Honoring someone is not just remembering them, but it is passing their memory on. The idea of living forever is leaving a legacy so that you are imprinted onto the hearts of everyone around you.
